Emilia Daarke has wanted to escape the Summer Court her entire life. She's not brutal like the other Fae. She's not savage. But they are.
When the boy she loves, Cade Vasara, Crowned Prince of the Winter Court, kills Emilia's twin, they are torn apart and Emilia's love for Cade dies just like her sibling did.
Years later, she has fallen in love with a Hunter - a forbidden love that goes against all that she has been taught. A man her father will never approve of. When her secret is outed, her father captures her Hunter and gives Emilia an ultimatum.
If she succeeds, she'll lose the one she loves. But if she fails, he will die, and she will never be able to forgive herself...
A Princess's Duty is the first book in the Of Fire and Frost duology. The story concludes in A King's Oath, releasing December 2018.
Em and I have a rocky relationship. At the beginning of the book there were several times I wanted to reach into the page and just yell, “Fight for yourself!” I wanted her to stand up for herself. I wanted her to fight, not just for Oberon but for herself. She felt so lost and I just wanted her to see that she could be so much more. The move to the Cade’s palace was good for her in so many ways. She had to face her grief, something that isn’t pretty but is needed in order to heal. She learned to fight for not only herself but for those she cared about. She started to become the fierce badass fae woman that I saw a glimmer of in the beginning. The Ice Kingdom was a trial all on its own, but what it brought her was worth all of the pain and suffering she went through. She loved Cade when she was younger. She’s hated him for the last 5 years. Her old feelings and new feelings are warring against each other, and she’s struggling trying to decide if holding onto her hate is worth losing the first man she ever loved … again.
Cade. He struggled with being who he wanted to be and who his father wanted to be. After that fateful day 5 years ago, the line between those two sides of him began to blur. He allowed the guilt to eat away at him and mold him into something dark and twisted like his father wanted. Nothing could ease the ache in his heart, that is until Em comes back into his life. Cade has always been in love with Em. He lost more than his best friend on that fateful day, he lost the only woman he’s ever loved. He has spent 5 years stewing in his guilt and hate for everything that went down that day and every day since. He can’t trust Em after everything, but even though his head won’t trust her his heart refuses to let her go.
A Princess’s Duty played around a lot with the idea of duality: dark/light, fire/ice, chaos/order, and love/hate. It was interesting to see how these opposites could shift from one to the other, almost seamlessly which you would think couldn’t be possible with how opposing they are to one another. Sloane has built a beautiful world within this story, that being said I would have liked this world to be a little more flushed out. I have so many questions regarding the inner workings of this world, and sometimes those questions would distract me from the beauty that was present. Holy Tahoe the plot twists. Those got me good. I’m trucking along thinking I have a grasp on where this story is going, then Sloane throws a wrench into the mix. She kept me on my toes twist after turn. That cliffhanger. Oh my lanta. I don’t know if I will ever forgive Sloane for doing that to me.
As much as the plot deals with dualities, Em and Cade reflect that same duality. They are the light to each other’s darkness. They are each other’s chaos in a world full of twisted order. She is the fire to his ice. And no matter how much they want to hate each other, their love for one another refuses to back down. I cannot wait to see where this story takes them.

Give me an alpha male with a woman who aces all forms of sarcasm and I'm putty in you hands -- bonus points if a Reverse Harem is involved. Supernatural esque romance and power plays tend to make my heart go pitter patter. I haven't met a book I wasn't willing to try, so if you've got recommendations email them my way. I'm a foul mouthed makeup addicted with slight wino tendencies.
