When Zachary Stafford first set eyes on Cassidy Pope she was being beaten by her father. After witnessing the traumatic event, he made it his mission to befriend her. As the years pass, their relationship evolves and Cassidy not only gives Zack her friendship but her love, as well.
Cassidy spent her childhood being verbally and physically abused. The best part of her life is her friendship with the Stafford twins, Zack and Rylee. Although she tries to put on a brave front, the years of abuse have turned Cassidy into a woman filled with insecurities who doesn’t believe she deserves love. Especially not the kind of love Zack has given her for the last twelve years.
On their wedding day, Cassidy’s insecurities get the best of her and she does the one thing she knows how to do well…she runs. Zack is devastated and when he discovers why Cassidy ran, his devastation becomes fury. Long ago, Zack made Cassidy a promise he fully intends to keep and sets off on a journey to bring her back into his arms where she belongs.
Will Zack and Cassidy get their happily ever after, or will Cassidy’s inner demons keep her from getting the only thing she ever wanted in this world? To be loved.

If you’re looking for an emotional journey, then this is the book for you. Having previously read D. Kelly’s The Acceptance Series, I am already familiar with her writing style and know she can bring a wide range of the feelings so I was prepared for sighs, tears, and some laughter. This story is no exception.
Sweet, sweet Cassidy is an amazing character who embodies love and forgiveness. Although she was abused throughout her childhood—and the book does plot out specific incidences—she still has it in herself to be accepting of all. I find her ability to give chance after chance to those that have wronged her with little thought to be astonishing. As I was reading and even sometime voiced by other characters, I don’t know how she does it.
Though born with a silver spoon, Zack is still a good man with a down to earth attitude. With affluence, he’s been awarded opportunities others wouldn’t have and he does not take it for granted. From an early age, he befriended Cassidy. While he knew about her abuse, he tried to save her in the childlike way he could. As they grew, he continued to be her protector, friend, and her only lover.
Cassidy, the runaway bride, spends the duration of the story in a passage of self-discovery. She has to learn about what love is and that she is capable of being loved. Fortunately, she has the support of Zack and her best friend to realize the truths. With little external factors, it’s her past filled with angst she must overcome. This beautifully written tale of an incredible romance is one I won’t soon forget.
