This is the first book in a trilogy. It states it in the synopsis and I knew it, however, forgot such while reading. If you remember this you’ll understand to some degree why the book has a significant amount of detail for certain subplots and not others and doesn’t seem to draw to a conclusion towards the end.
Allie Green is a rookie cop and a bit of a loner. Her support system is small, just her mom and her roommate. She has a huge family secret/tragedy which has driven her focus to both become a police officer and contradictorily seek vengeance for the event. This plan has been evolving and converging for over a dozen years. You learn of the event early in reading and it’s truly a heinous act which makes it easy to empathize with Allie and even to want her to be successful with her revenge.
For as much a Type A personality as Allie is, Tristan Cross is even more so. Running a large family based security and investigation corporation, he always seems to be overly prepared for each situation, which is easy to do when large sums of money and resources are at his disposal. He sets his sights on Allie from the beginning wanting her skills and a unique qualification from her recent past to accomplish his current mission. He offers her everything she needs to entice her to become a part of his company and the subsequent operation.
Allie’s story of revenge wraps up very quickly in the book. Or does it? I have a feeling we’ll revisit that stratagem again in the future books. Initially I couldn’t understand her actions, everything surrounding this specific subplot appears to abruptly end. I think mostly the confusion came because of a blonde moment where I forgot this is a first of a trilogy.
In the midst of all the intrigue are some erotic scenes. With one particularly performance that stands out amongst any in the genre, your eyebrows will raised but you’ll be left all hot and bothered when he directs her to masturbate for him. It’s truly a panty dripping act.
Also in the first half of the book particular portions are overly described while other pieces appear to be glossed over. The second half of the story, on the other hand, is a quick page turner; moving precipitously through danger and emerging with a nice romance between the two. While I was not entirely a fan of all the details at the end, I understand why the author employed them. They all lead to a HUGE cliffhanger, one of the best I’ve read recently. Literally two words in the last paragraph turn everything on its axis and for most will leave you clamoring for the second book. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait too long since it will be out in the middle of January.
