On the flap: She was one man's obsession...
Nine years ago, Claire Kramer's lover brutally killed her family, and he tried to kill her. She escaped, but she's been haunted ever since that attack. Too afraid to trust another man and too worried that her past will catch up with her, Claire never gets too close to anyone. But then she meets Noah York.
He must have her.
Noah York is a man with secrets. The world sees him as a billionaire hotel tycoon, but Noah has a dark and dangerous side. For years, he worked covert military operations before he built his fortune. When it comes to death, Noah is a master. He knows that he should steer clear of Claire, but the white-hot attraction Noah feels for the delicate beauty is instant--and consuming.
He will never let her go.
Someone else is just as consumed by Claire--someone who will kill to possess her. And if Noah can't stop the hunter in the darkness, he may just lose the one woman that he can't live without.
This is the third book in a series. I haven’t read the previous two but fortunately this one can be understood as a standalone.
Claire Kramer has endured more than her fair share of grief in her young life. At 25, she’s already buried her entire family and is alone. In high school a psychotic boyfriend, Ethan Harrison killed her parents when she tried to get away from his abuse. Ethan is a Harrison which means his family yields lots of power and money because of their political prominence…this also translates to him getting a virtual slap on the wrist for murder.
Instead of being able to heal from this tragedy, Clair e spends much of the next years having to constantly run and then try to re-establish her life. Someone is always on her tail. As soon as they find her, the blame and slandering begins again. They blame her for making this well-to-do Harrison go off his rocker. To top it off, her sister was brutally murder six months ago. (I think that happens in the previous book but isn’t needed to get this story.)
Now out of money and nowhere else to turn, she heads to New York to see if Noah York will give her a job and hopefully a chance to establish some roots.
Noah got out of the military and subsequent security career to become a hotelier. He no longer wanted to deal with death and the extreme circumstances of trying to help people. As a thank you for saving one man, he received his first hotel. Everything took off from there.
He first saw Claire at her sister’s funeral and it was at the very least lust at first sight. To his pleasure, she finally took him up on his offer of assistance. He gives her a job, safe place to live, and so much more.
If all you’re looking for a book with plenty of scenes in the bedroom, this isn’t your book. That being said, there is still plenty of heat and attraction between Claire and Noah. They have an intense connection which radiates throughout the story. It’s beguiling to see how the two exceedingly broken characters interact and grow for the duration of the book. They are both damaged in very different and yet fundamentally very similar ways. Claire and Noah have this constant dance of two steps forward and one step back all while trying to evade a killer.
Someone is still very much after Claire. The mystery person is killing anyone who’s had contact with her. Noah struggles to ensure her safety while trying to retain her love. The best part is you never fully realize the character until the end. I had it narrowed down to two people but kept waffling the whole time. This one is a quick read because it’s truly a page turner from the beginning. I will definitely pick up another book by this author when in the mood for some suspense.
