On the flap: Taking a break from her job at an art gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, Valla Denier escapes on a week-long camping tour of New Zealand with a small group of companions and two skilled guides. Valla is enchanted by the wild beauty of the South Island and Kaikoura Beach, as well as the local men. After catching the eye of a rugged, drop-dead-gorgeous man in a café, she is shocked to run into him later that evening at a karaoke bar. Setting her shyness aside, she serenades the stranger with a seductive tune. She never imagines the lyrics would be taken literally.
Later that evening, Valla is taken from her campsite and wakes up in a strange room. Her captor is the man from the bar, Brocan Judge, a six foot five wall of muscle with piercing, cobalt blue eyes. He is not responsible for her abduction; his friend has delivered Valla as a gift, and repairing the situation is not as simple as it sounds.
Valla soon learns that Judge is a Dom, intent on punishing her for her willful ways. Even more surprising is Valla’s reaction to him. When he offers her the choice to stay or leave, she must decide how far down the submissive path she is willing to travel. But trust has never been Valla’s strong suit. Will she be able to set aside her inhibitions and give in to the strong hand she has secretly craved, or will doubt trump her growing desire?
Valla likes to travel somewhere exotic once a year and this year she chose to take a guided camping tour in New Zealand. She spends this time seeing and learning about new places and things and uses it to unwind from her job as an art consultant. Even though she’s quick to make friends with her trip mates, she’s shy when it comes to being the center of attention.
Brocan Judge is a large and mysterious man. He appears to be a modern Crocodile Dundee. In actuality, he owns and runs a successful mining company he inherited from his father. He also happens to be a Dominant. While not an extreme sadist, he does have a firm hand.
Valla runs into Judge a couple of times while in a small town near their campsite; first during lunchtime in the local café and then again that evening in the bar. After a provocative karaoke performance, Valla finds herself alone with Judge only for the moment to be interrupted. Subsequently she is reflective when heading back to camp a little sadden that her chance has been missed. Suddenly she is kidnapped without pretense and awakens with the man that was on her mind. What will happen next?
Like the previous books from Christine Edwards, I found this to be enjoyable. It has a quick pace which keeps the page turn while the action is burning. That being said, I am also left with mixed feelings. The main characters have an intense chemistry and connection from the start but with her being kidnapped it makes pushes the limits on how they can have an honest and healthy fling or relationship especially when you throw in BDSM principles. Like previous heroines, Valla definitely displays a bratty side; she quite enjoys pushing Judges buttons which makes their interactions fun to read.
I think Claimed in Canada is still my favorite of this group of books but this one has the fieriest sex. It will undeniably leave you hot and bothered with the detailed scenes. This in another gratifying read and I can’t wait until the next.
