On the Flap
Livy notices him the moment he walks into the coffee shop. He's heart-stoppingly stunning, with a blue-eyed gaze so piercing she's almost too distracted to take his order. When he walks out the door, she thinks she'll never see him again. Then she finds the note he left on his napkin . . . signed M.
All he wants is one night to worship her. No feelings, no commitment, nothing but pleasure. Every defense mechanism Livy has adopted during her solitary life is at risk of being obliterated by this confounding man. He's obnoxious but well-mannered. He's a gentleman but aloof. He's passionate but emotionless. Yet the fascination is so powerful, Livy can't deny him... or herself.
M awakens something in Livy, something deep and addictive that she never knew existed -- and that she fears only he can satisfy. But she senses that behind the fast cars, fancy suits, and posh apartment, he's aching inside. To have him, body and soul, she'll have to brave his dark secrets. Delving into his world and breaking down his defenses become her obsession - an obsession that could shatter her heart beyond repair.
The first thing you need to know with this book is it is the first in a new trilogy. It does leave the story with a cliffhanger.
After having her mother taken away from her at an early age and raised by her grandparents, Olivia has had more than her share of hard knocks. Once her grandfather passed, her world has revolved around taking care of her grandmother and keeping the rest of the world at bay. She’s hasn’t allowed herself any fun or socializing since being a teen. Now with her grandma and best friend, Gregory, pushing her to move outside her comfort zone, she has taken a serving job at a local café. In her first week, she encounters ‘M’ who evokes more emotion from her after their initial meeting than she has felt in years. Her carefully constructed walls are in danger of crashing down.
‘M’ is a beautiful and mysterious man. He comes across rather arrogant and powerful. Throughout there are small nuggets of invaluable information and traits which emerge in bits and pieces. One of the most noticeable is that he needs everything in a precise place and/or manner. It is undeniably beyond just liking things a certain way and into obsessive compulsive territory. We become best acquainted with him in the last quarter of the book but are still left with more questions than answers.
Livy and M never have an easy relationship. It’s a constant state of pushing and pulling with explosive chemistry. Each time it appears they may have found enough common ground to make it work something, a characteristic, a person, an event is exposed and alters the bond yet again.
I am a huge fan of Jodi Ellen Malpas after I discovered her This Man series which I have read in its entirety on at least three separate occasions. From that trilogy, I’ve learned several points. First, expect the unexpected; just when you think you know what’s going to happen you can bet there’s a curveball coming. Another aspect is it includes good writing. The characters are developed, layered, and perfectly damaged. One or both tend to have a subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, masochistic streak. The plot is solid and dynamic. It drags you into their world without the ability to put the book down. A third piece of knowledge is this first book of the new trilogy will leave you with a cliffhanger. It is simultaneously frustrating and intriguing in the best way possible. I want and need more. There’s always a bit of withdrawal; it’s so addictive I need just one more chapter every time.
This erotic thriller does not disappoint. It is tremendously captivating. The first part really lays out the feel and sets up the trilogy. Get ready because the last quarter of this story is remarkable and extraordinary. The prologue which we know to be a historical event and seems to be ambiguous about who and when is revealed and is astounding. Then, even when I had a suspicion about ‘M’, I’m still stunned when more is exposed about him and his business. Not that all of that development wasn’t enough, an enigmatic man comes into Livy’s life again and turns the storyline upside down. I’m left clamoring and counting the days until the second book is released.
