We all have that someone we can’t forget, the summer it all began, and the sleepless nights wondering what went wrong.
For Gage Montgomery, that someone is Layla Baxter. When he was 18, he took one look at the chocolate-haired bookworm with porcelain skin and knew his life would never be the same. But it all came crashing down when Layla suddenly and mysteriously disappeared from St. Simons Island -- leaving him with nothing but her angel wing pendent around his neck. For 12 long years, Gage couldn’t shake what happened, if he’s the one to blame, wondering where Layla might be. When their paths finally cross, he’s determined to get the answers he’s spent his life searching for -- and to get the girl, too. Quiet Angel is a story of hope, survival, and lost love made new again.
“I missed you, too, but you were never far.” Gage touched his shirt with the wings inside. “You were always there.”
This is a two part romance. The first focuses on Layla and Gage as teenagers and their young love. A seemingly shy girl with her books, Layla, shows up to the same vacation town where Gage resides each summer. Suddenly Gage’s break before college doesn’t look as bad. In an effort to protect her from other boys, Gage acts as her protector before actually meeting her. In natural progression, they fall into an intense friendship and romance until Layla abruptly disappears one night never to be heard from again.
Part two centers on the present day. Its twelve years later and Layla and Gage find their paths crossing in an airport. Is it possible they can have a second chance? More importantly can Gage get past her abandonment? And can Layla overcome what made her run in the first place?
The second part of Quiet Angel is where we really get to see the characters develop. Layla is independent yet scared, driven yet scarred. She struggles to overcome a dark past but it has already cost her so much. Gage has fulfilled the entire plan set in place for him at a young age. He went to college and the military. Now he is CEO of the family business with political prospects in the future.
I first came to know Lane’s writing with Perfectly Broken where heavier subject matter intertwines with a charming romance. Fortunately, this is no different. It’s a beautifully written story of second chances a moving beyond an abysmal past. The characters are complex, flawed, and real. They experience bumps in the road but if Layla and Gage can get past those then they’re guaranteed a HEA.
