On the flap: Bound by passion, she was powerless to resist.
One dark evening in London, photographer Serena Folkes is indulging her impulsive side with a night-time shoot. But someone is watching her – mysterious entrepreneur Gustav Levi. Serena doesn’t know it yet, but this handsome stranger will change her life forever…
Serena is fascinated by Gustav, the enigmatic owner of the Levi Gallery, and she soon feels an irresistible pull of attraction. The interest is mutual, and Gustav promises to launch Serena’s photographic career at his gallery, but only if Serena agrees to become his exclusive companion.
To mark their agreement, Gustav gives Serena a bracelet to wear at all times. Attached to it is a silver chain of which he is the keeper. With the chain Gustav controls Serena physically and symbolically – a sign that she is under his power.
As their passionate relationship intensifies, Gustav’s hold on the silver chain grows stronger. But will Gustav’s dark past tear them apart?
A seductive and beautifully written novel for erotic romance fans. The Silver Chain is the first in the sexy, passionate and addictive Unbreakable Trilogy by Primula Bond.
The next book in the trilogy, The Golden Locket, is out in ebook on 21st November and paperback on 19th December.
Serena Folkes is a twenty year old woman who had a tough life growing up. Abandoned on a doorstep, she was taken in by a couple of religious fanatics who also happened to be alcoholics and abusive. To escape her issues, she began developing her passion and skills in photography. Upon her parents’ death she even travelled abroad and created some great collections. Now she has moved to London in search of a fresh start.
Gustav Levi is a 35-40 year old billionaire entrepreneur. He also happens to own the Levi Gallery in London. As a divorcee, he throws himself into his business with an occasional tryst. On Halloween night, he runs into Serena and is immediately enamored with her. Quickly recognizing they both have something to offer the other, he sets up a contract for them to have a relationship until Christmas or whenever her last picture sells.
This one starts really slow. It took me four days of repeatedly picking it up just to make it thought the first 30%. It nearly became my first book to not finish. I think I never really adjusted to the writing style. There’s a lot of verbiage but not a lot actually being said. It felt like I was reading in circles. Some of the similes and analogies just don’t make any sense.
The characters don’t seem well developed at all. Serena doesn’t seem clearly defined. One minute she’s gruff, then flighty, then introverted, then sucking some guy’s finger because her cousin is having sexual relations in front of her.
Also the nearly twenty year age difference between the two comes across as a bit icky since she’s 20. I think the gap wouldn’t seem so strange if she was a bit older with more experience but this come across as robbing the cradle. There’s nothing redeeming about the relationship. It’s unhealthy at best but lacks qualities of being good. One minute Serena acts likes she’s forced to do be with him although their contract gives them both an out, then the next she’s falling in love with him after just their third encounter, and then she’s back to feeling forced.
As an analyst by day, I often find it hard to not focus on the detail which is why some (or there lack of) in this story don’t add up. From the logical timeline implied this arc takes place over 11 days, half of which they are not together. Likewise the timing itself seems off; portions of it simply jump around while other things are taking less time than what would be normal or expected. For example, they can put together an art show in less than 48 hours but the chauffeur and Serena would have to stock the bar and he would serve drinks where a billionaire who could afford to have someone do it.
Largely, I’ll just say this wasn’t my cup of tea. I either didn’t mesh well with the writing style or something.
