On the flap: Some things you don't dare let go . . .
Melanie O'Bryan knows life is too short to be afraid of taking chances. And former Air Force sergeant Bennett Hart is certainly worth taking a chance on. He's agreed to help her students with a school project, but she's hoping the handsome handyman will offer her a whole lot more. Yet despite his heated glances and teasing touches, Mel senses there's something holding him back . . .
Bennett Hart is grateful to be alive and back home in Mirabelle, Florida. Peaceful
and uncomplicated-that's all he's looking for. Until a spunky, sexy-as-hell teacher turns his life upside down. After one smoldering kiss, Bennett feels like he's falling without a parachute. But with memories of his past threatening to resurface, he'll have to decide whether to keep playing it safe, or take the biggest risk of all.
Bennett Hart is now out of the Air Force after an almost fatal accident while deployed. He has spent the last couple of years not necessarily recouping but more like avoiding his issues. Unfortunately for him, those problems are brought front and center when (if you read Undeniable or the prologue in this book) Melanie O’Bryan is shot. While the sweet and sassy math teacher is still recovering from her physical and mental wounds, he’s there like a knight in shining armor trying to help her. The problem is that he’s getting too close.
All of the time Mel and Bennett spend together is not relieving either’s emotions. She has had a crush on him for a while and the more time she is with him, the more in over her head she gets. The same thing is happening for Bennett except he is a bit skittish with his emotions.
First, I’ll just put this out there I loved this story and at one point there may have been a few tears involved. The characters are rather complex. Mel might initially come across as sweet and perhaps a bit meek but really she has a firm backbone and the patience of a saint. Bennett is the strong quiet type complete with chivalrous southern values. These people could be anyone in your own group of friends so the familiarity of them makes for ease and more amusement.
I enjoyed the push and pull of their budding relationship. They start out as friends before moving on to be more. When they finally decided to pursue a romantic inclination, they did not disappoint. There is so much build up to their first time and it is fantastic, romantic with enough naughtiness to make it sizzle.
The story arc transpires over several months so you really get to see the growth in the characters and their connection. I knew there would be a “big” blowout at some point and when it happened I was taken aback. Yes, logically I know there has to be dissention to make that HEA even better, but wow.
I think the only downside to this book is I just wanted more. I know we’ll see them in future stories but theirs is a touching and poignant one. I can’t wait for the next one. This is a group of friends I can’t get enough of.
